Our Mission

Our mission is to equip each one of our kids daily with nutrition to grow, excellent education to build upon, and the happiest place filled with family to be after school!

Our Vision is to see each iKhaya child leave with tangible hope for the future, skills to apply, and a family to encourage them.

We open our doors each day at 1 pm to ensure iKhaya kids are coming “home” to a smiling, caring face, support for their homework & their academic concerns as well as a trustworthy team to heal from the ongoing trauma of the effects of poverty.

“This is indeed a house of hope to kids growing up in the challenging environment of Imizamo Yethu. People involved in the work at Ikhaya Le Themba deserve much support because they are doing an excellent job”

— Patrick Hajayandi, Community Member

A little background…

iKhaya Le Themba in isiXhosa means “Home of Hope” and was created in partnership with the families and community of iKhaya's kids.

iKhaya Le Themba is an after-school care facility for disadvantaged children in Imizamo Yethu. Most parents and caregivers won’t return from work till dark, so our team provides a safe and nurturing environment where children can learn, play, and grow. iKhaya is a purpose-built campus supporting 150 children and 130 families living in Imizamo Yethu through a range of comprehensive programmes.

iKhaya le Themba is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) working to provide a safe and nurturing space for orphaned and vulnerable children between the ages of six and 12 who have suffered from the effects of HIV/AIDS, poverty, and other traumatic life circumstances.  The organisation achieves this by providing a structured, holistic after-school care programme and family support centre which is in the interest of the children.  150 children attend our programmes daily where they are nurtured, cared for, and fed a hot meal by a passionate team of 11 child care workers.

iKhaya le Themba provides educational and holistic support, homework help, literacy, and numeracy labs as well as life skills, gardening with psycho-social activities, structured play, and counselling.

The kids of iKhaya.

Each year we open up registrations to our local community, Imizamo Yethu.

Hundreds apply, but we can only select a small number each year, assessing the level of need.

Once chosen, these iKhaya kids stay with us from Grade 1, up to Grade 6.

They are some of the most vulnerable children in the community, and their families are fully reliant on the care that iKhaya provides daily, all year round.

These kids are the reason we do everything we do.

They are our future leaders, plumbers, teachers, nurses or pilots… if we give them the backing they deserve.

iKhaya kids have hopes & dreams for the future, and it’s our mission that they leave with everything they need to make their plans come to fruition.

Will you take responsibility for the next generation with us? #bethechange
