Our After-School Care Model
According to World Bank Group statistics, “millions of young children are not reaching their full potential because of inadequate nutrition and a lack of early stimulation, learning, and nurturing care.” Poverty exposes them to stress that stunts their development.
Children are living with trauma before the age of six that no one should encounter before adulthood. Self-esteem, confidence, physical and mental issues, and malnutrition are only just some of these kids’ daily realities.
In South African schools, classes are oversubscribed, teachers are overwhelmed and the connection between a child’s home situation and school isn’t always considered.
Our Community Partnership
We have 150 children on our register who are based in the informal settlement of Imizamo Yethu.
Of over 100,000 people in IY, 60% are children. Homes are cramped for many people, life is extremely hard and crime is an everyday issue.
A township is no place for a child to wait alone after their school day ends.
At iKhaya Le Themba, we partner with our kids’ parents and primary caregivers to provide the peace of mind of after-school care with the personalised education these children need to build the foundations for adult life.
We collaborate with local community groups, schools and other NGOs to provide a range of educational workshops and programmes to increase the deposit into our local youth and families and help them thrive.

How We Are Funded
We rely on the generosity of global individuals who include an investment into iKhaya Le Themba in their monthly giving.
We ask parents to contribute R50 per month per child, which is a large ask for them but only 2% of the cost of the child’s place.
Organisations like ours would typically have corporate funding, but the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted this side of the NGO world.
Your donations truly could make a huge difference to our operation!
What the Money is Spent On
We teach our children to budget and be good stewards of money, so we do the same for our generous donations.
In our last financial year, we reported on 5% being spent on fun events for our children, incredible opportunities to learn, celebrate, and try new experiences. 8% was spent on children’s safety, such as transport to and from school as well as on site safety.
Since we feed 150 children each day, 6% goes towards nutrition. 81% pays for the delivery of their programs in education, life skills and mentorship.
Stories of hope & future
Our children are the rock on which South Africa’s future will be built; our greatest asset as a nation.
They will be the leaders of our country, the creators of our national wealth. Those who care for and protect our people. One meal at a time, one lesson at a time, one step at a time, one child at a time.
iKhaya kids are praised by their teachers & community for being studious, confident, ambitious, and relentlessly never giving up.
