9 Reasons Why After School Care is so crucial to South Africa

iKhaya Le Themba is an after school educate centre, and an amazing one at that. After nearly 20 years of providing this service to the community of Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay, it’s important to remind our family around the world what a difference a friendly face, extra schoolwork and some lekker sports are from 1pm-5pm everyday for these children.

9 Reasons why iKhaya Le Themba changes lives daily:

  1. Supervision and Safety: Many parents in disadvantaged communities work long hours and might not be able to provide adequate supervision for their children after school. After school care programs offer a safe and structured environment where children can be looked after, reducing the risk of them being exposed to dangerous situations or engaging in risky behavior.

  2. Academic Support: Disadvantaged children often face educational challenges due to limited resources at home and in their communities. After school care programs can provide homework assistance, tutoring, and access to educational resources, helping these children to improve their academic performance and increase their chances of success in school.

  3. Skill Development: After school care programs can offer a variety of enrichment activities such as art, music, sports, and workshops that help children develop new skills and interests. These activities can contribute to their personal growth, self-esteem, and overall development.

  4. Social and Emotional Development: Children from disadvantaged backgrounds might face social isolation or exposure to negative influences in their neighborhoods. After school care programs provide opportunities for children to interact with peers in a positive and supportive setting, helping them build social skills, make friends, and develop a sense of belonging.

  5. Nutritional Support: In many disadvantaged communities, children may not have access to nutritious meals at home. After school care programs can offer healthy snacks or meals, addressing potential nutritional gaps and contributing to the children's overall health and well-being.

  6. Reduction in Risky Behaviors: When children lack constructive activities and supervision after school, they might be more susceptible to engaging in risky behaviors such as substance abuse, gang involvement, or early sexual activity. After school care programs can provide a structured alternative, reducing the time children spend in potentially harmful situations.

  7. Parental Support: After school care programs can serve as a resource for parents by providing information on parenting skills, child development, and community resources. This support can empower parents to better support their children's growth and well-being.

  8. Breaking the Cycle of Poverty: Access to quality after school care can contribute to breaking the cycle of poverty. When children receive the support they need to succeed academically and socially, they are more likely to finish school, pursue higher education, and secure better employment opportunities in the future.

  9. Community Building: After school care programs often involve collaboration with local organizations and volunteers, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility for the well-being of disadvantaged children. This can lead to positive changes within the community as a whole.
