Our After School Program

Every day, 163 children between the ages of six and 12 attend our after school program where they are nurtured, educationally supported and fed a hot meal by a dedicated staff of 11, ninety per cent of whom are residents of Imizamo Yethu and several who have been on staff for over a decade.

We use all our time with the students to ensure they get what they need for their future, rotating through different learning areas (Maths, English, isiXhosa, Life Skills) to support what our children have been taught at school.

Our Daily Schedule

Monday – Friday
1 pm - Children transported safely to iKhaya

The homework lab is open for all to get assistance

Homework Lab

The children are also invited to attend the homework lab, a place filled with volunteers to help assist them with their homework, offering further explanation, encouragement and the tools to complete it well!

English

Our children learn to read, write and speak English to an impressive level. Our English curriculum assists this journey, and they work on it every week!

xhosa

As our official second language, and the home language of most of our children, we work hard to ensure that being bilingual means reading, speaking and writing well in both English and isiXhosa.

Free time!

iKhaya kids get hours of free time to be children, explore our beautiful grounds & play: things they will most likely not be able to do as freely at home. They are provided a safe space to ask questions, make mistakes, socialise and seek out a facilitator for support.

maths

We don’t just know how to recite our maths, we understand what it means to the world and to our lives. Our maths programme promotes both concrete and abstract thinking.

life skills

Our iKhaya kids face many challenges and need the right skills to navigate them. Our life skills interventions aim to grow our learners’ self-confidence and leadership skills, and equip them with important knowledge about HIV/AIDS and other diseases, fire prevention, crime and gang prevention, anti-bullying and much more!

Fitness

Our sports coach offers our iKhaya girls and boys soccer and fitness training twice weekly, teaching them self-discipline, teamwork, perseverance and responsibility.
