Our Model

According to UNICEF, more than 50% of South Africa’s children live below the poverty line. Income poverty is closely associated with “poor health, reduced access to education and physical environments that compromise personal safety.”

Countless children from under-resourced communities in South Africa are behind in their early learning, physical growth and social-emotional function, and only 35% of pre-school children have the right foundations in place to transition into Grade R.

Their families struggle daily to afford the food and basic services their growing children need to develop and thrive. They need our support.

Our Community Partnership

We partner with our kids’ parents and primary caregivers to provide the peace of mind of after-school care with the support these children need to build the foundations for adult life.

We have 175 Grade 1-7 children on our register who are based in the informal settlement of Imizamo Yethu.

  • Grade 1 = 30 children

  • Grade 2 = 35 children

  • Grade 3 = 32 children

  • Grade 4 = 21 children

  • Grade 6 = 13 children

  • Grade 7 = 15 children

We collaborate with local community groups, schools and other NGOs to provide a range of educational workshops and programmes to increase the deposit into our local youth and families and help them thrive.

How We are Funded

We rely on the generosity of global individuals and businesses who invest in iKhaya Le Themba’s program in their monthly giving.

We ask parents to contribute R200 per month per child, which is a large ask for them, but only 2% of the cost of their child’s place.

Your donations truly could make a huge difference to our operation!

What the Money is Spent On

In our last financial year, we reported on 5% being spent on fun events for our children, incredible opportunities to learn, celebrate, and try new experiences. 8% was spent on children’s safety, such as transport to and from school as well as on site safety.

Since we feed 175 children each day, 6% goes towards nutrition. 81% pays for the delivery of their programs in education, life skills and mentorship.
